Me (and many other people) on 31st Dec 2022: Wow where did the year go?
I like how this question just seems to be an endless rhetoric. It’s like there’s an unspoken agreement to echo out the same thought yearly…and this could also be on our birthdays when it suddenly hits us that we’re getting older.
I think the year goes like the wind; we can’t trap it. But if there’s one thing we can trap, it’s the memories in our year.
So how do we do that? Document it. It could be a written journal or an audio journal. Whatever works for you…
I have one which I call my gratitude journal. I’ve had it since the start of 2021 and each day, I make an inventory of something I’m thankful for. It could be as short as a line or two, sometimes it extends to a paragraph and on other occasions, a page.
It’s not all sunshine in there, I promise you.
For my hard days, I have something to look back on and say wow, thank you Lord that I survived that one. Getting through tough times is a lot to be thankful for.
For the amazing days, I sit in it, and relive the joy. It’s such a beautiful feeling to recall wonderful memories.
The years roll by pretty quickly.
It’s October now, and in a couple of months, I bet we’d all be asking the same question – where did the year go? And that’s alright because the year goes like the wind; we can’t trap it. But remember we can trap our memories and always come back to it.
So, is this an invite for you to own a journal? Absolutely. Write things down. It doesn’t have to be Shakespearean; it just has to be real.
And if you’d rather speak into a voice recorder, do it – it’s a great thing we’ve got apps on our phones. But make it a habit to know where your days, weeks, months and ultimately your year goes.
