Love & Friendship are miracles
...in this ever-moving world of ours, you stopped to choose each other.
For people who don’t have all the right words at their age, children do better at making friends than adults. And maybe it’s because they don’t have to think too hard about it. They just run around with whoever will run around with them. For adults, we pursue who we want to run around with – and it’s just a little bit harder than running with someone who already wants to run with you.
As we grow older, we notice how different we are from each other. You may be a reserved person; I may like to scream from the rooftop. You may not care for pets; the next person could be obsessed with having cats and dogs. Mr A loves hot tea even on a sunny day; Ms B can only shower with cold water. The list goes on. In the very ordinariness of our daily lives, even people who have lived together for eons don’t enjoy the same things.
How then is it that with all these differences, we want to be together?
I like blue, you love red. I like silence, you love sound. I like my room, you’re the life of the party. Maybe we both like food. Maybe we both enjoy listening to Jonathan Ogden. Maybe one thing here and there…maybe two things…maybe three. Plenty other things in between us. Yet…we gravitate towards each other.
Differences intrigue me. They have the power to separate and also to bring closer. It’s such a paradox. A person may choose to pursue friendship with you because they appreciate you being different from them. Maybe they’d like to ignite their life with the spark in yours. Some other persons may consider your spark a fire that’ll burn up their peaceful existence, so they stay away.
Friendship, and by extension love, evolves with time. Some relationships take on a new definition, while others remain the same or even slip away. As we grow, we start demanding new things out of life and even out of our relationships with people.
So that’s why I invite you to think of the people in your circle today. These are the ones who do life with you daily in different ways. In this ever-moving world of ours with all the differences in between, you stopped to choose each other, and that is a miracle. You should say thank you to the amazing people in your circle today.
